How Does Screen Printing Work?

Step 1: Design Creation

The process starts with a digital design, often created in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. This design is printed onto a transparent film, which will be used to create the stencil.

Step 2: Preparing the Screen

Next, the mesh screen is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. This emulsion hardens when exposed to UV light, creating a stencil of the design. The screen must be kept in a dark space to avoid premature exposure.

Step 3: Exposing the Emulsion

The transparent film with the design is placed on the emulsion-coated screen and exposed to UV light. The emulsion hardens around the design, while the areas behind the design remain soft and can be washed away.

Step 4: Creating the Stencil

The screen is then washed, which removes the soft emulsion and leaves a stencil of the design. This stencil allows ink to pass through only in specific areas, creating the printed design.

Step 5: Preparation for Printing

The screen is placed on a printing press with the material (like a T-shirt or poster) positioned underneath. Ink is added at the top of the screen, and a squeegee is used to press the ink through the stencil.

Step 6: Applying the Design

The squeegee spreads ink across the stencil, pressing it through the open areas and transferring the design onto the product below. This step is repeated for each item.

Step 7: Heat Curing and Finishing

To set the ink, the printed item is heat-cured, ensuring the design is durable and resistant to washing or fading.



Types of Inks Used in Screen Printing
